Before I Die: Oceanside Public Library’s Community Conversations About the Arts Program

Images above are from Oceanside Public Library’s series of Californians: Community Conversations About the Arts programs for 2018. From start to finish, Oceanside librarians plan, implement, and evaluate meaningful and engaging programs. Thank you Monica Chapa-Domercq and the whole Oceanside team for your dedication and connection to community.

Below is the proposal for Oceanside’s 2018 Californians: Community Conversations About the Arts programming.  We love to see the ways different librarians involve their community partners, using the bookshelf and conversation theme as inspiration. Can’t wait to see the way everyone explores the 2019 theme of Californians: Community Conversations with Veterans. More info coming soon!

The Library will present 3 programs inspired by Before I Die by Candy Chang. The Library plans to implement a Before I Die wall in close proximity to the Civic Center Library in downtown Oceanside in a space determined in collaboration with the Oceanside Arts Commission. The interactive art project will be available for public participation during the month of June 2018 and will be promoted through live social media campaigns tracking new additions or writing on the wall. As a response to this project, the Library will host a poetry workshop with renowned spoken-word poet Ant Black. The workshop will use the Before I Die theme and language as inspiration and participants will create their own Before I Die poems. To close out the month-long program, the Library will present a finale event featuring Ant Black performing spoken-word poetry that touches on the pertinent themes that emerge from Oceanside citizens sharing their aspirations on the Before I Die wall. Workshop participants will also be encouraged to perform at the finale event. Program planning will also incorporate use of the Californians: Community Conversations about the Arts bookshelf in book clubs and displays.
