California’s Poet Laureate, Dana Gioia, has an ambitious goal for his two-year term: to visit all of California’s 58 counties! He’s already gotten started, with appearances in June and July in rural libraries around northern California. Even in small communities, impressive audiences have shown up to hear Dana reading from his new collection 99 Poems: New and Selected and to have insightful conversations about writing, the arts, and the importance of the spoken word. The California Arts Council, which coordinates the office of poet laureate, will be featuring radio interviews and news articles about the tour at http://www.cac.ca.gov/initiatives/pl.php
Mary Menzel of the California Center for the Book and Elizabeth Kelley of the Shasta Public Libraries, with Dana at a reading in Redding on July 21.
